Explore Ensemble x Call & Response

Spatial Music Workshop

Ahead of their live electronics concert with the Greenwich University Loudspeaker Orchestra series (GULOS), Explore Ensemble present a free workshop day on spatial music in collaboration with Call & Response at Somerset House Studios. Led by Explore’s director, composer Nicholas Moroz, the day is aimed at composers, sound artists, musicians, engineers, and researchers with a working knowledge of electronic music, whether student or professional.

The day will begin with an introduction to the music and tech involved in Explore’s concert with GULOS on 28 January, including live demonstrations by one of the ensemble’s soloists, flautist Taylor MacLennan. The rest of the day consists of hands-on introductory sessions: one to IRCAM’s Spat5 in Max, and the other to Blue Ripple’s ambisonic software, Rapture3D Advanced including a new workflow for live performance in Max. The goal of the day is to introduce participants to the two approaches and give them a working foundation on which to continue their own learning.

Follow Explore Ensemble on Facebook here, and join the workshop event and concert events.

Day Plan

1030-1130: Introductory Presentation and Live Music

1130-1300: Introduction to Spat5, Session 1

Requirements

The workshop is for active participant only, as there is no space for auditors. To participate in the hands-on sessions you will need a laptop (ideally running Mac OS) with Max 8 running in 64 bit. Because of the limited number of places available and in order to get the most of the workshop day. we ask that all participants have their own copies of Max and a working knowledge of it. Spat5 can be downloaded for free from IRCAM’s forum once you create a user account. Blue Ripple offers a free bundle of their O3A plugins. Rapture3D advanced is not free but will be demoed in the final session.
